New year, new job? 5 accounting job openings that are hiring right now

While the New Year, New You trope has decidedly passed its sell-by date, taking stock of your career at this time of year is a common occurrence.

In fact, according to job listing platform Indeed, January is one of the most popular months to look for a new job. And while recruiters may be slow to respond in the first two weeks as employees settle back into the swing of things after the holidays period, that doesn't mean you should sit back and delay the application process.

So, what can you do to make your job hunt more effective so that you start securing interview call backs in the latter half of the month and into February?

For starters, give your resume a refresh and ensure that you tweak and tailor the information it contains based on the individual jobs you're applying for.

Yes, this can be time consuming while you're working full time, but taking a bespoke approach is the best way to beat the ATS (applicant tracking system) bots, and ensure your resume reaches the right people.

Reach out and prepare
It's also a good idea to reach out to your professional network and establish where the market is at in terms of hiring and growth or budget projections for the year ahead. While networking alone won't result in a job offer, tapping into your network can yield introductions or personal recommendations which can help you during the process.

Finally, start preparing for interviews before you even get your first call back. This is particularly important if you haven't interviewed for a couple of years, and your interview repertoire is a little rusty.

Common interview conversation starters including "tell me a bit about yourself" or "run through your work history" may seem innocuous on paper. However the person interviewing you will be expecting you to include key touchpoints that refer to your skills and experience, rather than a meandering word salad.
