TV sitcom accountants compete to become brand ambassadors

A group of celebrities who have played accountants and CFOs on TV are participating in a mock competition to become brand ambassadors for the financial technology company DataRails.

They include Brian Baumgartner, who played Kevin Malone in the U.S. version of “The Office”; Ewen MacIntosh, who played accountant Keith Bishop in the original U.K. version of “The Office”; George Wendt, who played accountant turned bar patron Norm Peterson in “Cheers”; and Andy Buckley, who played Dundler Mifflin CFO David Wallace in the U.S. version of “The Office.”

DataRails posted a YouTube video Monday in which the celebrity accountants humorously explain why they should be chosen as the company’s brand ambassador and ask for votes. In a pre-vote accompanying the ad campaign, DataRails conducted a LinkedIn poll indicating that Kevin Malone is recognized as the most famous TV accountant to have appeared on the small screen, giving him the early lead.

“Now you want to know a secret,” said Baumgartner. “As Kevin Malone in The Office, I was supposed to be bad at numbers. In real life? Excel, dynamic arrays...I love that stuff.”

His boss on the show disputed his claim. “All Kevin Malone did was take numbers from a sales report and slowly type them with two fingers onto a master spreadsheet,” said Andy Buckley. “Me? Buckley. Me? I played the CFO!

Their U.K. counterpart, Ewen MacIntosh, insisted the honor go to the Brits, saying, “It’s gotta be the U.K. I mean they did like 400 seasons, about a million episodes, we had two series.”

George Wendt touted his long experience on the bar stool at Cheers. “I've crunched the numbers on the best brand ambassador for DataRails,” he said. “Turns out, I can do that job sitting down too!”
