New Jersey Society of CPAs adds minority student scholarship

The New Jersey Society of CPAs announced that it has added a Minority Scholarship to its academic offerings.

Funded by Deloitte, the new scholarship will be open to diverse high school seniors who are considering accounting as their college major. Recipients will receive $1,500 each. Scholarships are awarded based on academic performance, standardized test scores, essays and personal interviews.

Qualifying applicants from the following New Jersey high schools are part of the pilot program: Rahway High School, West Orange High School, New Brunswick High School and East Side High School (Newark). The schools were selected based on student demographics and outreach from the NJCPA Career Awareness Program.

“Addressing the issue of diversity in accounting is crucial to the growth of our profession,” said Kyle Sell, an audit and assurance partner at Deloitte and a past president of the NJCPA, in a statement. “It’s a pleasure to recognize deserving students.”

“The new scholarship award shows the level of importance that our members place on reaching a diverse student audience," added Ralph Albert Thomas, CEO and executive director of the NJCPA, in a statement. "It’s wonderful to see so many members willing to share their experiences about the accounting profession and give back to the younger generation."
