IRS offers relief on reporting renewable energy tax credits

The Internal Revenue Service's Large Business and International Division is providing companies that claim tax credits for renewable energy and electricity projects an expedited way to report them for 2023 on Forms 3468 and 8835.

Form 3468 is the Investment Credit and Form 8835 is for the Renewable Energy Production Credit.

For tax year 2023, if taxpayers have more than 200 Forms 3468 or 200 Forms 8835, they can submit a single Form 3468 or Form 8835 with the aggregated credit amounts on the form. Taxpayers will need to attach a Portable Document Format document that contains all the required form information for each facility or property. The IRS said to name the file "CleanEnergyRelief.pdf."

If there are multiple PDFs, taxpayers should add a sequential number to the end of the filename such as "CleanEnergyRelief1.pdf" and "CleanEnergyRelief2.pdf".

The relief also applies to shareholders or partners of passthrough entities.

Under the Inflation Reduction Act, taxpayers are required to file separate Forms 8835 and 3468 for each facility or property for which they claim a tax credit.

"IRS is aware of taxpayer concerns of the inability to import data into the forms," said an IRS spokesperson in an email Wednesday.
