IRS Employees to Protest Sequester Furloughs

Several hundred members of the National Treasury Employees Union are planning a rally at 26 Federal Plaza in New York City to call for an end to sequestration and protest unpaid furlough days for Internal Revenue Service employees and a planned shutdown of IRS services for the public.

The rally is expected to feature NTEU president Colleen M. Kelley and NTEU Chapter 47 president Frank Heffler, whose chapter represents IRS employees in Manhattan.

In addition, the rally will include members from NTEU chapters in Customs and Border Protection at JFK International Airport and the New York Seaport, as well as participants from other NTEU chapters in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts.

Employees from federal agencies in 290 Broadway and 26 Federal Plaza are also expected to be present at Tuesday’s 11:30 am rally.

As a result of sequestration, the IRS is planning to shut down all public operations on five days between May 24 and August 30 (see IRS to Close to Public for Five Days under Furlough Plan). An additional two days of unpaid furloughs could occur in August or September. The NTEU argues that the unprecedented closings will result in an inability to assist taxpayers seeking help.
