IRS adds post-season in-person help on Saturday

Filing season isn’t over for every taxpayer, and the Internal Revenue Service is keeping some Taxpayer Assistance Centers open nationwide (including in Puerto Rico) this Saturday.

Face-to-face help will be available 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., no appointment needed, in many states.

“We recognize and understand not everyone can get to an appointment during normal business hours,” said taxpayer experience officer and IRS Wage & Investment Division commissioner Ken Corbin in a statement.

The IRS.gov local office-contact webpage lists TAC services offered during the event. Topics have included ID protection, ITINs, refunds and payment options. (Taxpayers can make payments by check or money order; the IRS accepts no cash during TACs.) Other topics include using the IRS withholding estimator, reconciling the advance Child Tax Credit or third-round Economic Impact Payment, tax bills and IRS audits.

Tax prep won’t be offered. Referrals will be given if assistance is unavailable from IRS employees at the TACs. Foreign language interpreters will be available. IRS staff will schedule appointments for a later date for deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals who need sign language interpreter services.

Individuals should bring current government-issued photo ID, Social Security cards for members of their household, including spouse and dependents, and any IRS letters or notices received and related documents.

Those who plan to request identity verification services must bring two forms of ID and a copy of the tax return filed for the year in question, if they filed a return.

IRS staff may also request a current mailing address and bank account information to receive payments or refunds by Direct Deposit.

When required by local pandemic-related guidance, visitors must wear face masks and social distance at TACs.

VITA personnel will be available at the Guaynabo TAC in Puerto Rico to provide free tax prep.
