FICPA honors 2022-23 Leadership Academy

The Florida Institute of CPAs announced the graduates of its 2022-23 Leadership Academy.

The FICPA Leadership Academy is a program for CPAs ages 35 and under who look to create professional connections and discuss important accounting matters with their peers. In December and January, participants took part in sessions hosted in Orlando and Tallahassee before they graduated on Jan. 25, as they attended FICPA's Hike the Hill event at the state papitol. During this event, graduates got to learn about the future of the discipline alongside Florida lawmakers and FICPA members.

For the second time since the Academy's launch in 2021, the FICPA partnered with the Succession Institute to develop its curriculum, under the supervision of former AICPA chair Bill Reeb and former AICPA and FICPA chair Tommye Barie.

"The future of the CPA profession is in good hands thanks to the dedication, drive and determination of these young leaders," said Reeb in a press release. "While Tommye and I share the knowledge and expertise we've accumulated throughout our respective careers, we learn just as much from our interactions and group dialogues with this talented cohort."

This year, 23 CPAs graduated from the Leadership Academy, which represents six more people than last year's cohort. Alex Welsh, who serves as chair of FICPA's Young CPAs Committee and an advisory member of the FICPA board of directors, was one of the graduates. Chosen by her peers to speak at the Leadership Academy graduation last week, Alex will serve a two-year term on the FICPA Council beginning this July.

"I would recommend the FICPA Leadership Academy to any of my young colleagues in Florida who are eager to accelerate their professional journey," said Welsh. "The program pushes you to expand your skills and your mindset in a safe, supportive environment. This is an essential program for young CPAs looking to navigate an evolving landscape and become the next generation of leaders, both in their organization and within the CPA profession."
