Dean Dorton acquires data analytics firm

Dean Dorton, a Regional Leader based in Lexington, Kentucky, has acquired Breakpoint Technology, a data analytics and technology collaboration practice based in Louisville, Kentucky, effective July 1.

Financial terms were not disclosed. Dean Dorton ranked 11th on Accounting Today’s 2021 list of Regional Leaders for the Southeast, with $37.81 million in annual revenue. The firm currently has 264 employees and will be gaining nine new team members from the acquisition.

The deal is representative of a trend among accounting firms to expand their technology consulting practices, especially in areas like data analytics. The acquisition will expand Dean Dorton’s technology expertise. Breakpoint Technology dates back to 2016, when it was founded by CEO Judy Nichols, CTO Greg Petrites and COO Jessica Gray. They and the rest of their staff will offer data analytics, digital transformation and process automation services to Dean Dorton’s clients.

“We are thrilled to welcome Breakpoint Technology to Dean Dorton at a time when data analytics, artificial intelligence and digital business process automation are continuing to change the way everyone does business,” said Dean Dorton president and CEO David Bundy in a statement Wednesday. “Organizations of every size need to be investing in process automation and consider how they can make their organizations nimbler and more effective using the data at hand to make confident decisions quickly. Breakpoint Technology’s team and expertise will allow us to help our clients achieve success at a completely different level, putting them a step ahead of their competition.”

Breakpoint has achieved Gold-level partner status with Microsoft and has partnered for more than 15 years with Microsoft, especially in the health care and education sectors.

“This is an exciting time for Breakpoint Technology to become a part of the Dean Dorton team,” Nichols said in a statement. “Our focus has always been to ensure that our solutions support the key components of our customers’ business as we partner with them toward success. Joining an organization like Dean Dorton that truly understands those key business drivers, at a time when the push for a full digital transformation is desperately needed in order to stay competitive, will enable us to jointly provide a higher level of service to our customers throughout the United States and worldwide.”

Dean Dorton previously expanded in Kentucky in 2019 by merging in BLD, a firm based in Louisville. In 2018, it added Massey Consulting, a technology consulting firm in Raleigh, North Carolina.
