Just over a month after pop icon Britney Spears spoke in court about her alleged abuse under her father’s conservatorship, her attorney has filed a petition to replace Jamie Spears with CPA and licensed professional fiduciary Jason Rubin, who is also an alum of PwC.
Jason Rubin is, currently, the president and co-founder of Certified Strategies in Woodland Hills, California. His firm specializes in forensic and investigative accounting, trust administration and conservatorship requirements.
After graduating from California State University with a degree in accounting, Rubin started his career as a staff accountant at Matson, Driscoll and Damico. He went on to take the role of senior litigation services consultant at Kellogg & Andelson, and then as director of forensic accounting, litigation support and business valuation engagements at CBIZ. He landed at PwC after that, performing the same role. After some time at Howrey and then Munger Tolles & Olson LLP, he founded Certified Strategies in 2010.
Spears has battled to escape the constraints of her conservatorship, and the rule of her father Jamie, since it was instituted in 2008. She recently was allowed by the court to retain her own counsel, which under normal circumstances is not permitted to people under conservatorships. Her attorneys, Matthew Rosengart and Eric V. Rowen, filed a petition to the court to instate Rubin as conservator, replacing Jamie Spears.
Rubin is a safe choice — the accounting profession is well regarded, and is a mainstay on the Gallup rankings for most trusted professions. Rubin’s extensive experience in issues around conservatorships will make him a logical and sensible choice to replace Jamie Spears, and may provide Britney more chance at success than petitioning for the conservatorship to be removed entirely.
“Ms. Spears respectfully submits that the Court should appoint her nominee; in that, it is an objectively intelligent preference to nominate a highly qualified, professional fiduciary in this circumstance,” stated the petition. “Moreover, Ms. Spears respectfully submits that, given the Court’s recognition at the July 14, 2021, hearing that Ms. Spears has sufficient capacity to choose her own legal counsel, she likewise has sufficient capacity to make this nomination.”
