Billions waiting in 2017 federal refunds

Unclaimed income tax refunds worth more than $1.3 billion await an estimated 1.35 million taxpayers who did not file a 2017 Form 1040.

The deadline for claims is the extended federal Tax Day of May 17, 2021.

“Time is quickly running out for these taxpayers,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig in a statement.

The IRS estimates the midpoint for the potential 2017 refunds is $865, from highs in New Hampshire ($968) and Alaska ($960) to lows in Idaho ($727) and Arizona ($766). States with the most outstanding 2017 refunds are Texas, California and Florida.

Taxpayers’ checks may be held if they have not filed returns for 2018 and 2019. The refund will be applied to any amounts still owed to the IRS or a state tax agency, and may be used to offset unpaid child support or past due federal debts, such as student loans.
