AICPA seeks minority college students for 2021 Leadership Workshop

The American Institute of CPAs announced it is accepting student applications for its 2021 Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop, to be held Oct. 13-15, 2021, in New Orleans.

The annual workshop invites minority college accounting students pursuing CPA licensure to bolster their skills and network with fellow students and CPAs. Sessions range from business etiquette, interviewing skills, and CPA Exam preparation.

“ASLW gives ethnic minority students an opportunity to really see the benefits of a career in the accounting profession and offers tools to prepare them as they launch their careers,” said Chris Mitchell, senior manager of diversity and inclusion for the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, in a statement. “It also provides these students with access to a network of professionals with whom they can build working relationships.”

“The accounting profession is committed to working toward expanding the number of ethnic minority CPAs,” said Crystal Cooke, the Association’s director of diversity and inclusion, in a statement. “ASLW is one of our efforts focused on pipeline, a critical area that the AICPA is undertaking to accomplish this important goal.”

The program is open to sophomore, junior, senior, 5th year or graduate college students. Applicants must be majoring in accounting, finance or tax and intend to pursue the CPA credential. The Leadership Workshop is funded by the AICPA Foundation and covers the cost of attendees’ transportation, hotel accommodations and meals.

Applications are being accepted through May 15, 2021. Students accepted to the 2020 workshop, which was cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, are invited to this year’s event and do not need to reapply. For more information, head to ThisWaytoCPA's site here.
