Top Apps for Accountants 2024

Accountants have pretty much always used technology — what else do you call an abacus or a slide rule or an adding machine? — but it is increasingly obvious that, as the world moves through its digital revolution, it has slowly become a technology-driven profession, where powerful software solutions are not enhancements but true necessities for all but the most basic of jobs. This has led to a veritable galaxy of specialized accounting applications, and a veritable universe of other apps that, while not specific to the profession, are nonetheless invaluable to their work.

But as important as apps have become to the accounting profession, the work of sorting through them and finding the ones actually relevant to you can be somewhat intimidating. So why not let our panel of tech-forward accounting leaders do some of that for you? We asked them, very simply, what their favorite apps are and why, from apps specific to accounting to more general business apps, or those that are just fun to use in everyday life. What we got was a wide variety of suggestions to solve a broad set of problems that crop up in the accountant's day to day.

Loom top app

Loom (video software)

Category: Communication and presentation tools
For certain people it can sometimes be easier to just say something than write it: Loom lets you record, edit and send video messages to teammates or clients. But if you want something to read, it can also turn your video into text.

"There are so many different screen recording apps, but I love Loom because it is designed for quick capture with even quicker sharing. I use typed text for communications when I can (email for third parties and Microsoft Teams for team members), I send Loom videos when text just isn't enough and you need the body language part of the communication process, and then I schedule a web meeting when Loom is not enough. The solution is also a fantastic way to manage team member training and SOPs; less writing, and more doing with the recorder on. It is more effective and faster than typing all the steps by hand, and coupled with a solution like Scribe (optionally run subsequently through a gen AI solution to thicken it up), you can combine the written steps with the recording and log a process that takes 10-15 minutes to complete in as little as…wait for it…10-15 minutes!" – Joe Woodard

As with Monday.com, the integrations are the real powerful under the hood on Jotform. Jotform can capture and process payment information at the time of contract signing (e.g., through Stripe), can update a third party's contact record in the CRM (e.g., HubSpot) and spin up one or more tasks or workflows for team member follow up (e.g., Monday), while placing the signed documents directly into a folder in solutions like Box, DropBox and OneDrive." — Joe Woodard
