Growth was more unevenly distributed among the largest firms in accounting in 2024 than in 2023 — but there was still plenty of it.
Close to half — 47% — of the firms in Accounting Today's Top 100 Firms and Regional Leaders lists reported double-digit growth, and 34 firms reported growth above 20%, confirming a trend from the past three years of widespread growth in both groups. That's down from last year, when the figures were 62% and 43 firms, respectively.
But while the fastest-growing firm in 2023 — Cherry Bekaert — had a growth rate of 100%, fully five firms reported growth rates for 2024 above 100%, including one — Crete Professionals Alliance — that grew an astonishing 310%.
The five fastest-growing firms firms are all backed by private equity; three of them are firms that acquire individual CPA firms and allow them to operate to a certain degree independently (Crete PA, Ascend and Springline), while the No. 2 firm, Prosperity Partners, has used PE money to accelerate its growth. The fifth-fastest growing firm for 2024, meanwhile, is ATKG, which is actually a member firm of Ascend, and has used capital from Ascend to fund an acquisition strategy. (Three other firms among the fastest growing, LMC Advisors, Opsahl Dawson and PP&Co., are also members of Ascend.)
