After playing catch-up since the start of tax season, the number of individual income tax returns received by the Internal Revenue Service finally surpassed the same period last year, up 0.2% as of March 29, 2024 (90,315,000 in 2024, versus 90,111,000 in 2023), a figure which could have been higher, but for the shorter filing season this year (61 days versus 68).

Meanwhile, the average direct deposit refund amount reached $3,124, up 5.3% on the same period in 2023.
