Accountants’ favorite apps: 2021 edition

Every year, Accounting Today asks a panel of experts (all practicing accountants) for a list of their favorite apps. This year, we included picks from readers as well. The results are a mix of accounting and finance apps that work particularly well with central accounting software; as well as other apps that keep accountants sane in their off hours.

SmartVault is a solution for online document storage and secure file sharing. The app also offers a branded client portal for communication with clients.

DocuSign

In a remote environment, e-signature capabilities are a must. DocuSign is a robust app on its own, but has strong integrations with the Microsoft and Salesforce platforms as well.

Liscio

Liscio
Liscio is a broad client communications and management app, which offers the following:

• Secure messaging;
• Secure document exchange;
• Client service team contact information;
• Mobile notifications; and,
• Information requests.

The company was founded by Darren Root, well known for creating the accountants’ network Rootworks.

Karbon

Category: Workflow
Karbon provides workflow automation, project management, team collaboration, client management and performance analytics. Karbon also now powers Intuit Practice Management for tax professionals, a huge stamp of approval for its functionality.

ADP

Category: HR and payroll
ADP offers one of the most comprehensive solutions in this space, including the ability to outsource these functions and more if the business user wishes.

Quotient

Category: Proposal software
Quotient is a quote-building app that allows users to create custom template quotes that are aesthetically pleasing.

Melio

Category: Payments, AP and AR
Melio is a vendor/contractor invoicing and payment app. Payments can be made via card or bank transfer, and users can choose whether vendors get paid by check or bank transfer.

LastPass

Category: Cybersecurity, password management
LastPass is a password manager that stores encrypted passwords online. The standard version of LastPass comes with a web interface, but also includes plugins for various web browsers and apps for many smartphones.

Relay

Category: Client communication, remote work
Relay provides a system of push-to-talk devices that can connect with each other and be named according to who uses them. The devices work like walkie talkies and can be connected to smartphones via the Relay app.

SnagIt

Category: Miscellaneous
Snagit is a screenshot program that captures video display and audio output. It allows users to capture an on-screen process, add notes and annotations, and produce visual instructions.

Goodnotes

Category: Miscellaneous
A paperless note-taking tool, Goodnotes is a notes and markup app for iPads.

Slack

Category: Communications
The widely used business communication/chat app has more functionality than some realize. Video calls, calendar sync and hashtagging functionality are just some of the features our readers liked.

My Business App

Category: Advisory and reporting
My Business App is a business advisory and management reporting solution made specifically for accountants.

ASAP Utilities for Excel

Category: Miscellaneous
ASAP Utilities is an add-on for Microsoft Excel (itself still one of the most popular and used apps for accountants) that “fills in the gaps” in Excel.
