Irish and Nigerian Accounting Organizations Sign Deal

The Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland has entered into a mutual recognition agreement with the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, which represents more than 24,000 members in Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy.

[IMGCAP(1)]CPA Ireland has expanded its international network and influence in recent years, signing international agreements with accounting organizations in several countries, including Australia, Canada and India.

The mutual recognition agreement with the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria offers both groups the opportunity to work more collaboratively together, undertaking joint research and thought leadership initiatives on the global stage, and acting as advocates within the International Federation of Accountants and regional accounting networks.

“This MRA strengthens the already excellent relationship between our two organisations,” said CPA Ireland president Brian Purcell in a statement. “Perhaps most importantly, in today’s environment, strategic alliances are integral to ensuring continued global recognition and global career opportunities for our respective memberships. We have already collaborated through the previously signed MOU on a variety of projects including provision of the CPA Ireland Quality Assurance Inspector Training Program which centered around quality assurance for auditors.”

The agreement also provides a route for qualified members of each body to become a member of the other body, and to enjoy the benefits which each organisation offers.

[IMGCAP(2)]“ANAN and CPA Ireland share a common global perspective on the advancement of the profession of accountancy, especially in relation to the strengthening of professional and educational standards,” said ANAN president Anthony Nzom. “This partnership provides our organisations with a unique opportunity to explore how we can advance the common interests of our members and improve our advocacy efforts on behalf of the profession in the international arena. There is a history of collaboration between our two organisations through a memorandum of understanding signed in 2013. That partnership facilitated practical training workshops on International Public Sector Accounting Standard and International Financial Reporting Standards part of a twinning program where CPA Ireland provided guidance in developmental areas.”

The mutual recognition agreement took effect on June 17. The agreement does not cover those wishing to practice as a public practice accountant or undertake auditing work due to the specific regulatory and legal requirements in each jurisdiction.
