The scholarship program, created by Congress via the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, marks PCAOB's sixth year of granting scholarships. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act uses monetary penalties imposed by the PCAOB in disciplinary proceedings to be used to fund merit scholarships for students in accredited accounting degree programs.
"Over the years, the academic achievements of more than 400 students have been recognized through this program," said PCAOB chairman James Doty, in a statement. "We hope this recognition inspires future accountants to become leaders in audit for the benefit of investors."
Each participating school nominates a scholarship recipient from their pool of accounting students. To qualify, students must be enrolled in a bachelor's or master's accounting program; demonstrate interest and ability in accounting and auditing; and demonstrate high ethical standards.
