AICPA's 2016-2017 'Legacy Scholars Program' open for enrollment

The AICPA announced on Wednesday that theirLegacy Scholarshipapplication is now availablefor the 2016-2017 academic year. The scholarships look to help students with their college tuition and encourage them to create and execute special on-campus events promoting the accounting profession.

TheAICPA Legacy Scholars programwill provide more than 100 scholarships for the 2016-2017 academic year, totaling more than $600,000 to undergraduate and graduate accounting students across the nation. A streamlined application process allows students to fill out one application for all four AICPA Legacy Scholarship awards.

“The future of the CPAprofession can be found in the students in accounting classrooms all across the country. The AICPA is dedicated to providing guidance and support to college students to ensure that the pipeline of accounting talent entering the workforce remains as strong and diverse as possible," saidJoanne Fiore, AICPA vice president, professional media, pathways and inclusion, in a statement “The AICPA Legacy Scholars program does more than just help students with the cost of their education. It also draws them closer to the accounting profession while encouraging them to be become involved in their communities and develop a sense of public service."

The AICPA Legacy Scholars program, established in 2011, awards recipients with a one-year scholarship and uses on-campus service work to help them develop soft skills needed to thrive in the profession. Scholarship recipients plan, promote and execute specific on-campus events each semester promoting the value of the profession. To date, more than 300 students have participated in the AICPA Legacy Scholars program.

The AICPA Legacy Scholars program is comprised of four distinct awards:

·        AICPA/Accountemps Student Scholarship

·        AICPA Foundation Two-Year Transfer Scholarship

·        AICPA John L. Carey Scholarship

·        AICPA Scholarship for Minority Accounting Students

AICPA Legacy Scholars areStudent Affiliate Members of the AICPA, a free membership option available to all students currently enrolled in college. Each AICPA Legacy Scholar has special access to CPAcoaches that are available to provide guidance on the student’s work and to advise on questions related to the profession and the work environment.

Scholarship funding is provided by contributions from the AICPA Foundation, Robert Half International, Accountemps, the New Jersey Society of CPAs, the Accounting Education Foundation of the Texas Society of CPAs, and the Virgin Islands Society of CPAs.
